Channel 9 Akaroa was Live in Akaroa with the TODAY Show, 22 June 2021, showcasing the best of New Zealand travel in Winter. Akaroa is best in Winter, it’s all yours!

Akaroa is the place to be in winter, if you are visiting for a ski holiday or to catch up with family and friends you can recharge and reconnect with your favorite New Zealand experiences in this beautiful sea side town.
Akaroa has the most amazing history and we hope that shines through in the Today Show, the only place in New Zealand with a French Settlement, where the French raced the English to claim this slice of paradise. Where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed for the first time in the South Island. Where the British demonstrated sovereignty of the South Island and where the British forced the purchase of 8.1 million hectares of the South Island from Ngai Tahu.

Akaroa is also a place of extreme beauty and wild nature. Most people know Akaroa for the Hectors Dolphins but there is much more to this incredible place than that. We have the largest private reserve in New Zealand, Hinewai, which is free and open to the public 365 days of the year. Hinewai has an amazing back story of using an expensive invasive weed, gorse, to regenerate native forest, without the cost of planting.

Hugh Wilson manager of Hinewai Reserve was thought a ‘fool and a dreamer’ 30 years ago for his vision of returning a weed infested farm to a native forest reserve. But just look at it now!

Only 15 minutes from Akaroa are places of incredible beauty with the best sea cliffs that you will find on this side of the world, if you can’t visit the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland this winter, then come and be the ONLY PEOPLE standing on the cliffs at The End of the Earth in New Zealand. There will be no crowd and no one bumming your selfie. You’ll have the view and the natural quiet that you will find here ALL TO YOURSELF!

“Winter is the best time to visit Akaroa, it is when the history comes alive, and you’ll almost have the place to yourself!”
